It’s been quite some time since we last heard from Childish Gambino. A year removed from Royalty and several months from his contributions on the Kilo Kish mixtape, K+, it woud appear that Bino hasn’t been up to much at all lately. And while long-time fans may be up in arms, I wouldn’t necessarily use this as a barometer of his relevance. Far from it. Donald Glover has too much left in the tank to fall precipitously into the annals of rap obscurity. If “Think Of Me” is any indication of what may be in store for the near future (new album?), well then, Gambino Girls and male counterparts alike should have moderate reason to rejoice.
Gambino appears on the monstrous 53-track 3 hour long Funkmaster Flex mixtape, Who You Mad At? Me Or Yourself?, joining a massive list of rap heavyweights and B-listers (Lil Wayne, Wale, Cam’ron, A$AP Rocky, J. Cole, Action Bronson, and Rick Ross among others), and delivers that same brand of witty double entendre driven lyricism that we’ve come to expect now from the oftentimes divisive rapper. It’s really quite decent. Of course, there’s still that ever-present verbal braggadocio and entitlement that naysayers love to naysay on, but it hearkens back to the Culdesac Gambino where the rhymes were a bit tighter and the delivery a little more deliberate. It’s also worth noting that the sound quality leaves something to be desired, but Glover raps so effortlessly over the Chemist-produced beat that it’s really an afterthought.
So wherever you may stand on the man, know that he’s continually bringing something different to the table and at the very least, deserves a listen. Probably two.
